Southern New England: UCONN’s Metal Research Capabilities
Thursday, October 25, 2018
Waterbury, CT
EVENT DETAILS
Join the PMA Southern New England District for an informative presentation covering the University of Connecticut’s (UConn’s) Metal Research Capabilities of the Tech Park Innovation Partnership Building (IPB). Presenting will be Dr. Rainer Hebert from UConn’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
With the opening of the Tech Park IPB, UConn entered into a new phase of industry collaborations. This presentation will highlight capabilities now in place at IPB as well as those available at the Institute of Materials Science, and ways for UConn to support industry. Special emphasis will be placed on metal additive manufacturing and materials characterization, since these two areas represent strengths in the current UConn materials portfolio.
After an overview of IPB capabilities, the additive-manufacturing section of the presentation will summarize the current status, including machine capabilities and the current challenges. Future direction will be discussed as well as aspects specific to precision metalforming. The presentation will end with a foray into manufacturing simulations—one of the major trends in manufacturing. UConn has positioned itself to support smaller companies with a new training center for manufacturing simulations within IPB and a new multi-university Center for Materials Processing Data.
The presentation will cover:
- Overview of UConn’s new Tech Park and orientation toward supporting industry
- Opportunities, challenges for using computer simulations of manufacturing processes; UConn’s angle in supporting manufacturing simulations
- Current landscape of metal additive manufacturing
- Metal additive manufacturing in the context of precision manufacturing
Speaker
