Top 10 Materials Engineering Moves for Max Structural Component Reliability
From failed fasteners to bottoms that rip out of railroad tanker cars, Dr. Baskin sees a broad range of materials-engineering-related failures in his engineering practice. The reasons for these failures are narrow compared to the broad spectrum of failures. In fact, from his experiences there are only about 10 materials-related decisions that lead to the majority of broken structural components. Without killing the suspense, in broad strokes some of these culprits include corrosion/embrittlement, creation of unintended stress concentrations, and accidental microstructural modifications. By spreading the word regarding these specific culprit mechanisms, Dr. Baskin’s hope is to contribute to improving the reliability of structural components of which audience members are involved.
MEET THE SPEAKER
Donald Baskin, Ph.D., Principal and Founder, Spectrum Materials Engineering LLC
Dr. Donald Baskin is the principal and founder of Spectrum Materials Engineering LLC, which focuses on helping its clients make better products through the application of a broad spectrum of principles in materials science and engineering. In addition to running Spectrum, Dr. Baskin has appointments in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He teaches Structural Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Technologies and Structural Optimization to undergraduates, graduate students and Naval officers.
In previous years, Dr. Baskin worked in the international automotive industry where he spent time at the Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) Materials Research Lab in Ulm, Germany, and in Body Engineering Release at Chrysler LLC in Auburn Hills, MI. During this time, he held positions pertaining to every aspect of automotive body structure development. Dr. Baskin holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Irvine.
