Payton Caris’ fascination with toolmaking started as a three-year-old when his grandfather gave him a set of real tools. Payton has always been a hands-on person as he learns best by manipulating and experiencing the materials. Payton excelled in his Applied Mechanical Engineering program at the Carroll County Career and Technology Center in Westminster, MD, earning a certificate last January. He also earned a NIMS certification and received six college credits.
Payton has learned that when working with metals you need to be smart, patient, precise and very accurate. He is furthering his education and skills at the Pennsylvania College of Technology. Since he’s been there, Payton’s machining skills have increased. He wants to use his creativity to design and build quality tools and parts out of metal. Payton believes that it is satisfying to see the transformation of raw materials into finished products. He likes the steps of designing the tool, drawing it out on a blueprint and abiding by the dimensions and tolerances.
Payton’s main career goal is to obtain his Automated Manufacturing degree and work for a company that will challenge his problem-solving skills and push his craftsmanship to a new level. Payton wants to be an expert in the operation of all modern metalworking machines. In the future Payton can see himself as a manager or an instructor, passing on his knowledge to others.
Congratulations, Payton! You are going to do great things with your career!
