A 2017 survey of PMA and NTMA members showed that 86% of members who responded have open skilled positions and 94% reported having challenges recruiting qualified employees. This problem is pervasive and significant. Most estimates, including those from Deloitte Consulting and the American Manufacturing Institute, project that manufacturing facilities will need to fill 2 million jobs over the next decade. Great but underutilized resources are the hundreds of thousands of highly skilled candidates with military experience who are looking for full-time jobs and good careers.

Brig. Gen. (ret) Marianne Watson serves as CFA Director of Outreach. Until her retirement from the military, she served as the Director of Manpower and Personnel at the National Guard Bureau. She was chief human resources officer of the Air and Army National Guard, responsible for leading the employment transition operations, among other functions. When deployed to Afghanistan, she was head of National Guard Affairs when 30+ percent of the U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan were National Guard members.
